Most Canadian households replacing a gas furnace are quoted somewhere between four and eight thousand dollars installed. The spread is wide because the furnace itself is often less than half the total.

What actually moves the price

Efficiency rating, the size of the unit, and whether the installation is a straight swap or needs new venting, ductwork changes or electrical work. A difficult install in an older home can add thousands before anyone touches the equipment.

Get three quotes, and ask each one to itemise the equipment separately from the labour. A quote that will not separate them is hiding something.

Rebates

Federal and provincial programmes change often, and the amounts are significant enough to be worth an hour of checking. Heat pump rebates in particular have been generous, and some are only claimable if the work is done by a registered contractor — so confirm eligibility before the work starts, not after.

The cheapest quote is not always cheapest

Ask about the labour warranty, not just the manufacturer’s. A ten-year part warranty is worth little if the installer charges for every visit to fit those parts.
