Heating and cooling equipment usually gives weeks or months of notice before it fails outright. Recognising the signs is the difference between a planned replacement and an emergency call-out at the worst possible time.

The six

Age past fifteen years. Not a fault in itself, but it changes the maths on every repair.

Rising bills with no change in habits. Efficiency falls before equipment stops.

Short cycling. Turning on and off every few minutes stresses everything.

Uneven temperatures between rooms. Often ductwork, sometimes a failing blower.

New noises. Grinding, squealing or banging are all mechanical, and none of them improve on their own.

More than one repair in a season.

A common rule: if a repair costs more than a third of a replacement and the unit is past twelve years old, replace it.

Getting a second opinion

If you are told a system needs replacing, a second quote costs nothing and occasionally saves thousands. Any contractor confident in their diagnosis will not mind you getting one.
