Getting a straight answer

  • Ask three. One quote is a price; three is a market, and the middle one is usually the honest one.
  • Say what the equipment is and how old it is. A contractor can price a job from that and cannot price “it is broken”.
  • Ask what is not included. Permits, disposal of the old unit and electrical work are the three that turn a quote into a surprise.
  • Check the licence and the insurance before you sign anything. In most provinces that is a public register and takes two minutes.
